This hand-coloured fashion plate is from La Mode Illustreé, a fashion magazine published in Paris. Dated 1869, the plate illustrates three day dresses, including one for a young girl. It is signed, 'Anaïs Toudouze'.
Although shorter, the young girl's dress is similar in design to that of the lady standing next to her. The bodice is tight fitting, the upper skirt is looped up at the sides and trimmed with large bows.
Earlier in the century, there had been an attempt to dress little girls in more comfortable, less restricting clothes. In the mid-Victorian period, however, they were dressed as replicas of their mothers. Some even had miniature crinolines provided for them.
