Monument, of John Napier

This stone monument commemorating John Napier (1550-1617), the famous Scottish mathematician, was made in 1842. It is in the Parish Church of St Cuthbert in Edinburgh.

The design of the monument is modelled on the frontispage of Napier's book 'Mirifici Logarithmorum Canonis Descripto', published in 1614, in which he described his invention of logarithms.

John Napier was famous throughout his lifetime as a theologian, but is remembered today for his mathematical inventions.
