Brass bowl
Add to album

This brass bowl was found at Dowalton Loch Crannog in Wigtownshire. It was made sometime between 1000 and 1600, and deposited in Dowalton Loch, a sacred site dating back into the Bronze Age.

The basin was hammered out from a sheet of metal. It has a projecting rim which is imperfect in places. Although now oval in shape, it was originally round and has been distorted by later damage.

Dowalton Loch appears to have been a sacred site for millennia. Prestigious objects dating from the Bronze Age to Medieval periods were found on the bed of the loch when it was drained. Vessels may have been symbolic of fertility and plenty.
