This end of a handle made of bronze or brass was found at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It is from a type of pan known as a patera. The object dates from between 80 and 180 AD.
Roman pans of this sort were expensive cooking wares and were used for heating wine. Many were made in Roman Britain, but others were clearly imported from Gaul. Some probably had a religious purpose.
