Harness mounts
Add to album

These two lead harness mounts were found in the area of the Royal Nurseries to the north east of Craigmillar Castle in Edinburgh. They date from the 18th century.

The mount on the left has a lozenge-shaped head while the right hand mount has a circular flower head.

Although harnesses are rarely found, the mounts, fasteners, studs, and strap junctions often survive. They must have been common items wherever horses were used in transport.
