Trade token (reverse), Penny, of Loch Leven, Kinross-shire
Add to album

This is the reverse of a 1797 copper penny trade token of Loch Leven in Kinross-shire. Manufactured by Kempson, with dies sunk by Wyon, the token was for sale to collectors.

The reverse depicts a girl treading linen in a tub. The surrounding text above reads 'ANTIENT SCOTTISH WASHING'. The Latin inscription below may be translated as 'Evil to him who evil thinks'.

Between 1787 and 1817 over 10,000 different types of trade token were issued to ease the shortage of small change. The contemporary fascination with tokens resulted in them becoming collectors' items. Some tokens were issued purely for collecting.
