Fashion plate, from La Mode Illustreé
Add to album

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from La Mode Illustreé, a fashion magazine published in Paris. Dating from 1884, the plate illustrates two day dresses and hats. It is signed, 'Huard' and 'Anaïs Toudouze'.

The bustles on these dresses are quite exaggerated and tend to arch up and out from the back. The skirts are draped and trimmed at the back into elaborate bouffants. The lady on the left carries a fan, the one on the right, a parasol.

Fans remained popular throughout the late Victorian period. They could be concealed in the ample skirts, so there was no need for a handbag. The 1890s saw trends for ostrich-feather fans, black lace fans and hand-painted gauze fans.
