Banknote, Twenty shillings, issued by J Stewart Mackenzie, Stornoway, Lewis, Outer Hebrides

This twenty shillings banknote was issued by J Stewart Mackenzie of Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides on 21 January 1823. The note was printed using steel plates engraved by Rowe, Change Alley, London.

The central vignette is of a sailing ship with 'Stornaway' mis-spelt underneath. The note is dated, numbered and signed by hand.

Although no bank existed in Stornoway until 1830, £1 banknotes were circulated in the 1820s by J Stewart MacKenzie, husband of the proprietor of the Isle of Lewis, Lady Hood MacKenzie.
