This is the reverse of a bronze medal by MacGillivray, commemorating David Livingstone. The medal dates from 1873.

The reverse depicts a winged female figure with a sailing ship underneath. Below the palm-covered island in the bottom left corner is the inscription, 'MacGillivray'.

David Livingstone (1813-73) first visited Africa in 1841 and quickly became involved in exploration. He was an opponent of the slave trade, and believed the only way to rid Africa of slavery was to open up the interior to 'Commerce and Civilisation'.
