CandleholderThis stone candleholder is from Corsbie near Newton Stewart in Wigtownshire. It is thought to date from the 17th century. The candleholder is in the form of four pillars, connected at the top, bottom and centre by an octagonal pillar with `MPI', `W', `R', `M', `M', `J', 'CORSBIE' scratched on its faces. It is thought the candle was introduced to Britain by the Romans. From then until the second quarter of the 19th century, it remained the most widely used form of artificial light.
