Fragments of a glass amphora and a cupThe glass amphora sherd was found at Culbin Sands in Moray. The fragmentary glass cup was found in a souterrain at Tealing in Angus. Both are remnants of valuable goods, probably passed from one chief to another, ending up miles from the Roman frontier. The amphora sherd is of clear green glass, with daubs of white, red and blue paint on the inside. Powerful local chieftains controlled contact with the Romans, keeping most of the Roman objects and passing some onto their followers. The Roman objects provided valuable raw materials, and were often reused for other purposes. Record detailsTo search on related items, click any linked text below.
