This miniature of Charles II in a gold locket dates from the second half of the 17th century.
The miniature shows Charles with a long ringleted wig and a thin moustache. He has a white collar and a blue ribbon. On the reverse is a crown and sceptre and the motto: 'Dieu et Mon Droit' [God and my right].
Many pieces of jewellery commemorate the later Stewart monarchs, particularly after the execution of Charles I in 1649. The pieces were worn by supporters of the Scottish dynasty and handed down through their families into the 18th century.
