Tongs, fire rake & shovel
These ironwork fire accessories were made by the Edinburgh firm of Thomas Hadden. On the left is a pair of log tongs, in the centre a fire rake and on the right a fire shovel. They date from the first half of the 20th century.
The log tongs have short square shafts and grooved paddle ends. The painted black rake has a twisted shaft ending in an elaborate 'S' scroll. The shovel has an 'ogee' shaped pan - a pointed arch formed with the curve of an 'S' shape on each side.
Important commissions were vital for firms like Hadden's who opened for business in 1901 at Silvermills Lane in Edinburgh. Work would be ordered by architects and private customers.
