Stoneware storage jarThis stoneware storage jar was made in 1896 at Buchan's Pottery at Portobello in Midlothian. The jar is inscribed 'Mrs Hume / Selkirk/ 1896 / Be canny with the butter', and impressed 'Buchan / Waverley Potteries /Portobello'. Good supplies of coal and clay and easy transport by sea meant that the south side of the Firth of Forth was an ideal location for potteries to develop.
