RecordFashion plate, from The Queenpublished in London
Fashion plate, from The QueenThis hand-coloured fashion plate is from The Queen, a monthly magazine published in London. The plate illustrates outdoor day dresses for two women and a young girl. It is dated 2 August, 1879. The fashion at this time was for solid, stiff textiles. Instead of soft flounces, there were knife pleats. Interest in the back of dresses persisted and there were many fashion plates giving back views and profiles. Trains emphasized this trend. First published in 1861, The Queen continued to issue hand-coloured plates until 1898, when it switched to full colour printing done by Waterlow in England.
