RecordMedal celebrating the birth of Prince Charles Edward Stewart
Medal celebrating the birth of Prince Charles Edward StewartThis is the obverse of a bronze medal celebrating the birth of Prince Charles Edward Stewart, an heir for James VIII, the 'Old Pretender', in December 1720. The medal was made by E. Hamerani in Rome. The obverse has busts of James and his wife Clementina, daughter of Poland's king John Sobieski. The inscription translates as 'King James III, Queen Clementina'. Medals such as this were an important weapon in the propaganda war waged between the British state and the Jacobites who aimed to put James VIII, the 'Old Pretender' on the throne. Medals were used both to encourage supporters and ridicule opponents. Record detailsTo search on related items, click any linked text below.
