Model, of lighthouse tender PS Pharos
Add to album

This wooden model represents the iron-built paddle steamer 'Pharos', a lighthouse tender launched from the yard of Tod & McGregor in Glasgow in 1854. The model is built to a scale of 1:120.

After 20 years in service, the 'Pharos' was broken up and the name transferred to a new, larger paddle steamer.

The first Eddystone lighthouse, built off Plymouth in 1698, was unfortunately washed away. The 18th century brought new methods of construction and design and permanent structures were eventually built. Lighthouse maintenance vessels, often adapted from coastal steamers, kept lighthouse keepers supplied. More recently, lighthouse tenders were used to check buoys and inspect navigation lights and fog signals on oil rigs.
