made in Glasgow
This transfer-printed earthenware soup plate was exported to South East Asia by the Glasgow potters, J. and M.P. Bell and Company. It dates from between 1842 and 1880.
The pattern is called 'MALAGA'. The plate's centre shows a man and woman on horseback, together with other seated figures, in front of a city wall.
Bells started exporting by the 1860s. Their trade with South East Asia was particularly important.
