RecordPiece of a handleFrom Cardean, Perthshire
Piece of a handleThis handle of a Roman pan, of a type also known as a patera, was found at the site of the Roman fort at Cardean in Perthshire. It was used at the fort between 82 and 87 AD. The handle has been stamped with the name of the manufacturer, 'Cipi Po...', which is short for P. Cipius Polibius. Many mass-produced articles in the Roman world were stamped or inscribed by the manufacturers to indicate the makers, contents, dates or ownership, which suggests basic literacy amongst a wide section of the Roman population.
