From Jarlshof, Shetland
This bronze harness pendant was found at the Norse settlement at Jarlshof in Shetland. It was used sometime between 800 and 1100.
The ornamentation, now obscured by corrosion, depicts two rampant animals back to back within a circular frame with cable pattern.
Although leather rarely survives, the metal buckles, strap fasteners, terminals, plates, mounts, and pendants attached to a harness are sometimes found. Some are simple, for everyday use, and others more ornate.
