Print and medals, of Lieutenant-Colonel John Cameron of Fassiefern, 92nd Highland Regiment

This print of Lieutenant-Colonel John Cameron of Fassiefern of the 92nd Highland Regiment dates from around 1815 and was published after Cameron of Fassiefern's death. It is pictured with four of his medals.

The medals are a small Army Gold Medal for Vittoria with clasps for 'Orthes' and 'Nive', the Waterloo Medal, the Sultan's Gold Medal for Egypt 1801, and the Gold badge of Portuguese Order of the Tower and Sword.

Cameron was one of the 92nd Highland Regiment's first officers, and a Gaelic-speaking member of the Highland gentry. He obtained his original commission by recruiting men through the influence of his family. Although he had a reputation as a strict officer, like many traditional Highland officers he felt a strong sense of responsibility for the men he recruited and led. He was killed at the battle of Quatre Bras in 1815. His death broke a link with the regiment's traditional Highland origins.
