Soup plate (detail)This detail shows two marks of the Britannia Pottery Company Ltd in Glasgow. One mark is transfer-printed, the other impressed. They are on the base of a transfer-printed earthenware soup plate dating from the 1920s. The transfer-printed mark consists of a seated figure of Britannia in a circle surrounded by the text 'B.P.Co. Ltd/MADE IN SCOTLAND'. Above is the name of the finish of the plate - 'SCOTCH IVORY'. The impressed mark is 'IVORY'. Scotland's once great pottery industry suffered greatly with the loss of export markets caused by World War I and the Depression of the 1920s. The economic crisis of the inter-war years destroyed virtually every Glasgow pottery. Record detailsTo search on related items, click any linked text below.
