Seal impression (cast)
Add to album

This is a 19th century sulphur cast of a seal impression. The impression was made from the seal of the abbot of the Abbey of Kinloss in Moray, dating from the 14th century.

The seal depicts an Abbot holding a book and crozier, standing on a mount. The inscription 'SIGILLVM [ABB]ATIS : DE KINLOS' translates as 'Seal of the Abbot of Kinloss'. The gold border is modern cardboard trim.

The Cistercian abbey at Kinloss was founded by David I in 1151, and was an important and wealthy monastery. Royalty including Edward I and Edward III stayed there. The abbot had the right to a seat in Parliament.
