Add to album

This is the obverse of a copper halfpenny trade token of W. Croom of Dundee in Angus. Dating from between around 1790-1800, the token was manufactured by Matthew Bolton. The die-sinker was Ponthon of Birmingham.

The obverse depicts the shield of arms, supporters and motto of Dundee. The surrounding text reads 'PAYABLE AT W. CROOMS./HIGH STREET DUNDEE'.

Issued mainly in farthing or halfpenny denominations, tokens varied in quality from crude lead discs stamped with initials to elaborate pieces of craftwork from the die-sinkers with vivid depictions of industrial or commercial scenes.
