This 19th century engraving shows Merchiston Castle near Edinburgh. Merchiston Castle was the family home of John Napier, the famous Scottish mathematician. It later was incorporated into Napier University. 6-10-00
John Napier (1550-1617) was famous throughout his lifetime as a theologian, but is remembered today for his mathematical inventions. He went to St Andrews University when 13 but never finished. Then he travelled to the Continent but he was back in Scotland when he was 21. After that he married and spent the rest of his life on his Scottish estates.
