Add to albumThis soup ladle, dated 1776, was made in Edinburgh by Patrick Robertson. It is one of a collection of 250 pieces of silver plate made for Sheriff Donald MacLeod of Geanies in Ross-shire and his descendants.
The ladle has an 'Old English' stem and a gadrooned bowl rim.
When MacLeod wanted a second ladle to match his Edinburgh-made one, he went to Alexander Stewart in Tain who made him a copy. This illustrates how fashionable designs from the capital were taken up slightly later by local craftsmen.
