Add to albumThese wrought iron fire accessories were made by the Edinburgh ironworks firm of Thomas Hadden. They consist of a a fire rake (on the left) and two pairs of fire tongs. They date from the first half of the 20th century.
The fire rake has a short twisted shaft and a flat semicircular raker. Both sets of fire tongs have heart shaped handles.
In the late 19th and early 20th century there was a revival in the use of wrought iron, especially as architectural decoration. Scottish firms like Thomas Hadden's underwent a revival due to increasing interest in Scottish styles and workmanship of wrought iron.
