Fashion plate, from La Mode Illustreé

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from La Mode Illustreé, a fashion magazine published in Paris. Dating from 1882, the plate illustrates two day dresses. It is signed, 'Huard' and 'I. Desgrange'.

Both women are wearing straw hats trimmed with flowers. Their dresses reflect the current popular fashion for tied-back skirts, 'cuirasse' bodices, high necklines, pleated trimmings and demi-trains.

By 1874 the 'cuirasse' bodice had become an important element in fashion. It was a corset-shaped bodice with a design somewhat similar to that of a man's jacket.
