published in London
This hand-coloured fashion plate is from a scrap album containing a selection of 19th century plates. The plate is from The Repository of Arts, a monthly magazine published in London by Rudolph Ackermann. Dated 1 March, 1820, it illustrates a walking dress.
In her left hand, the woman is holding a very large muff - a cylindrical covering of fur into which the hands are placed for warmth.
Unlike many of the early fashion magazines, The Repository of Arts maintained a high standard of fashion plate throughout its existence. It was in publication from 1808 until 1829.
