Fashion plate, from La Mode Illustreé

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from La Mode Illustreé, a fashion magazine published in Paris. Dating from October, 1900, the plate illustrates a day dress and hat for winter wear. It is signed, 'Cholet'.

The style of this period was not comfortable to wear. Necklines were very high with collars lined and boned. Skirts were close fitting with rigid corsetry. Long bodices were narrow on the ribcage.

La Mode Illustreé first appeared in 1860 and was one of the most important fashion magazines of the second half of the nineteenth century. It was published every Sunday and had a circulation of approximately 20,000.
