Four wooden combs

These four wooden combs, from Tanzania in East Africa, were used as hair ornaments by the Bantu speaking peoples of East Central Africa. Dating from the late 19th century, they were donated by the head of the Church of Scotland mission at Blantyre.

The combs are decorated with glass beads in varying designs and colours.

The mission station at Blantyre was founded in 1876 by the Church of Scotland as a memorial to David Livingstone (1813-73) and in response to the Free Church mission at Livingstonia.
