This silver denarius was minted in Rome by Publius Sulpicius Galba in 69 BC. It was a special issue, as indicated by the legend 'S.C'. This picture shows the obverse of the coin.

The obverse depicts Vesta, the goddess of the hearth, wearing a veil. Behind her are the letters 'S C' (for senatus consulto), indicating that this was a special issue ordered by the Senate.

Most Roman Republican coins were minted by officials called moneyers. In exceptional cases the Senate ordered other officials to strike issues. The reverse indicates that the moneyer struck this issue in his position as a curule aedile.
