RecordPart of a ceiling of painted oakFrom Guthrie Church, Angus
Part of a ceiling of painted oakThis is part of a painted oak ceiling from Guthrie Church in Angus. It dates from the late 15th century and is the only painted ceiling surviving from before the Reformation. The painting depicts the Last Judgement. Christ sits on a rainbow in judgement on humanity, with John the Baptist and the Virgin Mary interceding for the souls of the faithful. The ceiling covered the Guthrie Aisle, the private burial place of the local Guthrie family. The artist's name is not known, but he probably also painted the rood-screen at nearby Fouls Easter Church. Record detailsTo search on related items, click any linked text below.
