Shabti (back)

A shabti is a model of a servant, buried with an ancient Egyptian in order to perform menial tasks in the Afterlife on behalf of the deceased. This example of hard faience, decayed to a white colour, dates from the Late Period (between 664 and 337 BC).

This is a picture of the back of the shabti. It is in the form of a mummy, standing on a plinth with a back pillar. He carries a basket over his left shoulder.

Wealthy people in ancient Egypt were buried with a range of objects to help them in the Afterlife. These included religious amulets, food and drink, furniture, games, clothes, jewels, and servants to do the work.
