Photograph, of Border pipe drones
Add to album

This photograph shows Border pipe drones in Hamish Moore's workshop at Dunkeld, Perthshire in 2000.

The pipe drones are made of either boxwood, from the Pyrenees Mountains, or Perthshire yews.

The Border pipes were traditionally popular on both sides of the Scotland/England border. This is reflected in the common repertoire between the Scottish Borders and Northumberland. In Scotland many of the border towns employed a border piper whose duty it was to play through the streets in the early morning and to sound the curfew at night.
