Add to album

This small ceramic pot was found in a cemetery at Brackmont Mill near Leuchars in Fife. It contained the cremated remains of a newborn baby. It is a smaller version of a type of pot found in adult burials, and was buried sometime between 2000 and 1500 BC.

The pot is decorated with incised lines forming triangles and hatched diamonds.

Different age groups sometimes had different burial customs. Some children received a modified version of an adult burial. Here, this unusually small pot containing the remains was buried upright in a cemetery where all the adults' urns were upside down.
