Fashion plate, from La Mode IllustreéThis hand-coloured fashion plate is from La Mode Illustreé, a fashion magazine published in Paris. Dating from 1872, the plate illustrates a wedding dress and an evening dress. It is signed, 'Anaïs Toudouze'. The dress skirts and bodices are trimmed with lace. Both women have their hair brushed back and arranged in curls and loops with large chignons (knots or coils of hair worn at the back of the neck). Adèle Anaïs Toudouze was the second daughter of Alexandre-Marie Colin (1798-1875), a painter and lithographer. Along with her sisters, Héloïse and Laure, she was responsible for some of the most charming fashion plates of the mid-nineteenth century.
