Coin (Obverse), ten shilling piece, from reign of James VII (II of England)This is the obverse of a silver ten shilling piece minted in Edinburgh in 1687, during the reign of James VII. The obverse bears a portrait of the king. The Latin inscription translates as: 'James II, by the Grace of God '. James' reign as successor to his elder brother began in 1685 and ended four years later in military defeat at the Battle of the Boyne in Ireland.
