When constructing a rural dwelling house, this heather rope may have been used to tie roof timbers together. It may also have been tied to stones to create weights for holding down a thatched roof.

Roof timbers were also tied together using ropes of straw, horse hair or coarse grasses from dunes.

For centuries the land supplied resources of everyday life for Scottish people, providing the materials for homes and furnishings. Industrialisation changed this but, in some more remote areas, the use of local materials continued into the 20th century.
