Trade token (reverse), Penny (proof), of Thomas Webster Junior, Dundee, Angus
This is the reverse of a 1797 copper proof penny trade token of Thomas Webster Junior of Dundee in Angus. Manufactured by Kempson, the token was designed by James Wright Junior. The die-sinker was Willets.
The reverse depicts Dundee Town House, founded in 1732. The surrounding text reads 'DUNDEE PENNY' with the date split into 17 and 97, to the left and right of the town house spire.
Five hundredweight of copper pennies were struck for Thomas Webster Junior. Circulated locally, trade tokens could be used to buy goods or redeemed for regal coinage. They were also an ideal way for a company to advertise its wares.
