From Carlungie, Angus

Brooch
Add to album

This enamelled bronze brooch was found at Carlungie in Angus. It is an expensive brooch, imported from Gaul (modern day France), sometime between 100 and 200 AD.

The openwork brooch is inlaid with blue glass in a hidden red enamel matrix and small white glass spots in a greenish matrix. Some of the leaf-shaped and small blue circular projections have broken off.

There are many ways in which Roman objects travelled beyond the frontier. Some were the result of trade or diplomatic gifts and bribes by the Romans to local chiefs. Others were then passed on from one native chief to another.
