These pieces of stone moulds were found at the native hillfort settlement at Mote of Mark in Kirkcudbrightshire. They provide evidence of metalworking between 500 and 700.
Precious metal was often recycled and stored for convenience in ingots. The most common ingot form is sausage-shaped, as would have been produced by the moulds pictured here.
The Mote of Mark was an important defended settlement in the early historic period. Excavations have revealed evidence of extensive metalworking. Together with other exotic finds, such as imported pottery, they suggest it was a high status stronghold.
