Suit & hat

This green knitted woollen lady's suit was made in Britain around 1935. The satin-trimmed straw hat dates from the same period and was made by Maison Henry of London.

The suit consists of a jacket, skirt, cape and belt. The woollen fabric is woven in a slight bouclé thread - curled or looped to give a knobbly effete.

By 1925, the skirt length for women had reached the shortest it had ever been for European women. In the early 1930s, it lengthened again. The fashionable line was a sophisticated slim look, achieved by bias cutting of fabrics (cut in one piece with the pattern placed at angle on the cloth). This gave stretch in the right place, e.g. the hips, but fell away in a straight line to eliminate bulk.
