This claymore, a two-handed Highland sword, dates from the early 16th century. The blade is made of steel. The claymore is pictured here with its leather scabbard.

On both sides of the blade are the letters 'IHS' - the first three letters of the name 'Jesus' in Latin, and a common Christian emblem. The grip is a modern restoration made of wood. The original would have been covered in leather.

The claymore (from the Gaelic for 'great sword') is a characteristic Highland weapon. Two-handed swords were used throughout Europe, but this style of hilt was only used by Highlanders.
