Tongs were used by a blacksmith to grip hot iron. These 19th century tongs were used at the smithy at Langshaw in Galashiels in the Scottish Borders.

The jaws of the tongs are shaped to hold an iron rod in the same plane as the handles.

Hammer, tongs and anvil were the basic tools of the blacksmith.
