Scabbard chape
Add to album

A scabbard chape was placed at the end of the scabbard to protect the sword tip. This example is made of bronze and was found at Cauldhame near Brechin in Angus. It dates from between 950 and 750 BC.

The chape tapers from the mouth to the bottom. It is cracked across the middle.

Bronze swords were carried in scabbards, probably of wood and leather.
