Prince's Strand, Island of Eriskay, Outer Hebrides

This shore of the Outer Hebridean island of Eriskay, off South Uist, was where Prince Charles Edward Stewart (Charles Edward Stuart or Bonnie Prince Charlie) first set foot in Scotland on 22 July 1745. The shore has been known ever since as 'The Prince's Strand'.

Charles had come from France to launch a rebellion to overthrow the ruling Hanoverian dynasty in Britain and win the British throne for his father, James. After initial success, the rebellion ended in disaster at Culloden in April 1746.
