Add to album

This is the obverse of a gold pistole minted in Edinburgh in 1701, during the reign of William II. The coin was worth 12 pounds Scots.

The obverse bears a portrait of the king with, underneath, a sun rising above the sea. The Latin inscription translates as: 'William, by the Grace of God '.

The gold for this coinage was imported by the Darian Company, whose symbol was the sun rising above the sea.
