TassetA tasset is a piece of armour to protect the thigh. This example was used by a pikeman and comes from the armoury at Inveraray Castle in Argyllshire. It is made of iron and dates from the 17th century. The tasset has hooks at the top for attaching it to the breast-plate. Pikemen still wore armour like this in the civil wars of the mid-17th century. It was kept by the nobility for arming their retainers, and also by burgesses who had to take their turn at 'watching and warding'.
