Add to album

This black painted wrought iron template of a lion was made by the Edinburgh ironworks firm of Thomas Hadden. It dates from the late 19th or early 20th century.

The template consists of five separate pieces which, when assembled and painted red, form the symbol of the India Rubber Company.

In the late 19th and early 20th century there was a revival in the use of wrought iron, especially as architectural decoration. Scottish firms like Thomas Hadden's underwent a revival due to increasing interest in Scottish styles and workmanship of wrought iron.
